At St Joseph’s we have developed a buddy system to encourage positive relationships between older and younger children within the school, whilst fostering a sense of whole-school community. A buddy system also teaches important social skills, such as empathy and compassion, and creates a caring school ethos.
Buddy systems help to promote friendship and support between older and younger peers through regular collaboration between their classes, both inside the classroom and in the playground. The benefits of this buddy system are twofold; the older children learn to take on responsibility and feel valued and respected while the younger children feel safe and supported. When students feel valued and safe within their school community they are more likely to build positive relationships with their peers which ultimately leads to improved learning outcomes.
