Early Years: Reception-2
One step inside our Early Years classrooms tells you that this is a special place.
On any given day you will see children engaged in learning and play - listening, creating, writing, singing, watching, dancing, concentrating.
You will see our students publish their own books, put on plays and be involved in imaginative play and physical activities while building the educational foundation that will prepare them for the rest of their lives. We take a child-centered approach where the child feels safe and calm which fosters a sense of belonging.
We know development occurs between the ages of 4-8 years old. Children may prefer to engage in parallel play, moving to group play and multiple interactions that culminate in special, significant friendships being formed. As social skills develop, gender differences may be evident through their interactions with others.
To support the emotional and physical development of children in the Early Years high quality relationships need to be formed between child and teacher. We believe learning and development is enhanced by positively supporting and encouraging each child to achieve success.
We take a thematic approach in the Early Years to nurture each child’s development:
- PreSchool: Let’s play
- Reception: I belong
- Year 1: Here I am
- Year 2: I can do it
Our Early Years teachers are committed educators who understand young children and their development. They take a team approach to share ideas and resources and plan together to provide a collaborative, open and flexible approach to learning. They engage in professional development, up-to-date research and aim to live out the school’s mission respectfully and professionally. These teachers are supported in their work by an ESO who bring additional energy, creativity and innovation to each child’s educational experience.
St Joseph School teachers are the soul of the program and it is their mission to make each student feel successful and special.
